Getting a GoPro Hero 9, might need a new computer or iPad to go with it.
Problem I came across
I recently got the latest GoPro and the videos on it are super big in size as they are 5k Ultra HD. These videos take heaps of gigabytes.
The problem occurred when I tried uploading these videos to the GoPro cloud, which is super slow. it took 24 hours to upload a single video. So that’s where I started looking to upload videos on computer and editing them before uploading them on the internet.
So those videos didn’t work on my old Mac book Pro as they are too much for the old mac to handle. I tried playing the GoPro videos on the computer, they played for a sec and stopped for a sec, kept doing it repeatedly instead of playing the video continuously.
Then I tried uploading it on my old iPhone, same problem. iPhone 6s is not compatible for 4k/5k videos so it doesn’t help either. All these older devices don’t support HEVC which stands for High Efficiency Video Coding. So they are not able to play the videos that are of higher resolutions.
Cheapest solution was to get an iPad, i was looking at getting one already. The new iPad Air has got A14 Bionic chip, that’s the most advanced processor Apple has released so far. So this device is going to let me upload videos and edit them as I wanted.
But this might not be a solution for many people and no one tells you about problems like this. So if you are looking into getting a GoPro consider all these factors.
Issues with Go Pro Video editing and uploading
1. GoPro cloud is pretty useless, it takes forever to get your content uploaded. Put it this was I have been out few times and have filmed awesome videos that are floating around either on cloud or on the memory cards as it is very hard to upload them.
2. The problem that occurs even after you have uploaded your video on the cloud. There is no easy way to edit these videos. All I can see is the option to share it to social media or youtube. But when you try to do that it takes hours and then it cancels the upload anyway.
3. Other option is to download the video after uploading that is going to take hours again and then edit it in imovie software. But that download also keeps getting interrupted and you can’t edit your content.
4. Quik an app by Go pro
Another useless app, i tried editing my 20 minutes video in this app and it cropped it and converted it into a 2 minute trailer video which was all over the place with strange music playing in the background. There was no option to edit your footage or any other option to expand the duration of the video. It’s a non user friendly app. So i ended up deleting the app.
5. Go Pro app storage issue.
What’s the point of uploading your videos on the cloud?
The purpose is to upload the videos on the go pro cloud that you pay for and save the storage on your device.
But this doesn’t happen with GoPro, i uploaded videos to the go pro cloud and got rid of all the videos on my iPad. and still there was no room on the iPad. I looked into the settings and GoPro app took 50 gb out of my 64 gb iPad storage. I decided to delete the app. And my iPad was empty again.
6. Wifi error.
There is another annoying problem with the GoPro when you are trying to see content on the GoPro app on your iPad, you select view media. So it asks you to join your GoPro. When you select yes it will disconnect your wifi and connect to your GoPro’s network. So after that i am not being able to connect the GoPro app on iPad to the wifi.
I even tried disconnecting my gopro and reconnecting it to the go pro app. And i even tried deleting the app completely and reinstalling it. Still the same problem. I am writing this article as it all is happening right now.
Is it worth getting go-pro cloud?
You are paying A$69.90 for uploading your videos on the cloud which is not working. So at this stage no.
If you have a Hard-drive, use that instead. It will be much quicker that way.
The next step.
So what I am planning to do now. I filmed a few videos in 1080 p, which is the standard for filming videos or uploading as it is great quality video and it doesn’t take up all your memory.
I am thinking of uploading these videos directly to the GoPro website instead of going through the app. I can either connect the SD card in my laptop and then upload to the cloud or put it in hard drive and connect it to iPad to upload.
It’s taking a while, stay tuned I will definitely write another article about the best solution to upload your GoPro content on the internet, when I find one.
